"As a champion of the rights of persons with disabilities and a link member to the CRPD (UN Committee of the Rights of Persons with Disability) for the Committee on Culture and Education, I welcome the adoption of this report. The Labour Party has long championed the rights of those living with disabilities at every level of government. In the UK, there are an estimated 11 million people with a limiting long-term illness, impairment or disability, with the most commonly reported impairments being those that affect mobility, lifting or carrying.
The report pays special attention to the EU institutions themselves, which are to be a role model in implementing the Convention. This includes staff regulations and recruitment and retention practices as well as public events hosted by Parliament and on Parliament’s premises.
Mainstream society often excludes people with disabilities and they are effectively denied their human rights. I am of the opinion that disability-based discrimination must be tackled in the same way as discrimination on other grounds, including multiple discrimination. This is especially important for women and children with disabilities, older persons and individuals who have complex support needs, including those with intellectual and psychosocial disabilities."@en1
