"I voted in favour of this report because the Labour Party has long championed the rights of those living with disabilities at every level of government. In the UK, there are an estimated 11 million people with a limiting long-term illness, impairment or disability, with the most commonly reported impairments being those that affect mobility, lifting or carrying. Mainstream society often excludes people with disabilities and they are effectively denied their human rights. The report pays special attention to the EU institutions themselves, which are to be a role model in implementing the Convention. This includes staff regulations and recruitment and retention practices as well as public events hosted by Parliament and on the Parliament’s premises. I am of the opinion that there is no hierarchy of human rights and disability-based discrimination must be tackled in the same way as discrimination on other grounds, including discrimination on more than one ground. This is especially important for women and children with disabilities, older persons and individuals who have complex support needs, including those with intellectual and psychosocial disabilities."@en1
