"Madam President, overall this proposal on the European Border and Coast Guard agency is a balanced and important framework for improving external border management and helping to uphold human rights and international law. It is critical that the agency is properly supported and enabled to coordinate operations and mobilise resources. In doing so, it can help protect refugees in distress and facilitate the movement of goods and people within the EU and across borders.
As a member of Parliament’s Committee on Transport and Tourism, I am confident, following our debates, that the agency will take account of the need for good transport logistics and infrastructure links across borders, including in relation to maritime routes. In these difficult times we must not forget the socio-economic benefits of our EU policies in promoting a connected Europe – and the added accountability of the agency to Parliament and Member States through this proposal is welcome. Furthermore, whatever happens next with the legal and political future of the UK within our shared continent, it is essential we engage constructively with a valuable collective endeavour such as this one."@en1
