"I welcome the excellent work of my colleague Brando Benifei on this report and accordingly I voted in favour of it. The report includes the perspective of the Culture and Education Committee of which I am a member, highlighting the key role played by culture and education. Indeed, education is the key to both the economic and social inclusion of refugees and asylum seekers, in particular young people. That is why the CULT Committee has put forward the notion of ‘education corridors’ and calls for further supporting the cooperation between EU universities and universities in places of conflict, to ensure that children and young people who have to flee their country can still pursue their education. It is not only important for the welcoming countries, who will benefit from the economic contribution of educated newcomers, it is a moral/human duty for European societies to guarantee that those young people have the opportunity of a brighter future. I particularly advocate a proper recognition of the role of informal learning, including lifelong learning, sport, volunteering, culture and the arts which, by providing spaces for intercultural dialogue and exchange, not only facilitate the social inclusion of refugees into their new communities, but also address stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination by the majority."@en1
