"Mr President, it has been rightly said that Ireland has more at stake than any other Member State because of our close relationship with Britain. They are our best allies and also our biggest trading partner. Allied to that, we have the border and we do not want under any circumstances to see a hard border restored because that would lead us into the hands of the extremists once again. Having said that, Ireland is fully committed to the European Union, a European Union of equals, and that is why we have to ensure that there are no more special meetings of the original six.
I also want to say that calls for the United Kingdom MEPs either to step down or to resign from their positions or from their portfolios within the European Parliament are incorrect. They are as legitimate as any of us and they are entitled to stay until such time as the United Kingdom actually leaves the European Union. Finally, I just want to say that I welcome Mr Nuttall’s conciliatory tone this morning, but we have a dilemma. If the United Kingdom is seen to be better off outside the European Union, why would any member stay within it?"@en1
