"I voted in favour of this report, which analyses how Member States have done in achieving their renewable energy targets. There is currently an EU target of 20%, which is shared by Member States and broken down into national targets. Some Member States have been quicker to implement their targets than others. For instance, Ireland is set to fall short of its heat energy target, but to reach others. The report expresses concern that some Member States may have to revise policies and instruments to achieve their targets. Overall, the report is quite good, criticising the promotion of biofuels for transport, which competes with the food production sector. The report highlights the need for a modal shift and for higher energy efficiency of renewables in order to improve the sustainability of transport. And it rightly criticises the reliance on market mechanisms to get us all to use renewables. For these reasons I voted in favour."@en1
