"Mr President, having attended COP 21 on behalf of Parliament, I am very pleased with the way matters are progressing and indeed with the leadership shown, in particular by Commissioner Arias Cañete since he took office. I think we are moving in a very practical and sensible manner and at the same time – as Mr Marias mentioned a few minutes ago – we can do so in an environmentally friendly way, meet our targets and, at the same time, not damage our economy. Yesterday I had a meeting with our own new minister, Minister Naughten. I think he has a very firm grasp of what we need to do in Ireland, and I am quite sure the same applies to all other Member States. On Tuesday night here I was at a meeting where we were discussing decarbonising the transport sector, so the market signals are quite clear. I think the industry is moving in the right direction and therefore what we have to do is to guide them along, make sure the targets are set, that there is no escape for anybody, and we can meet the COP 21 targets which we set out to do. I think the Commission is moving in the right direction and I support it in that."@en1
