"Mr President, Conservative MEPs support increasing the amount of energy coming from renewable sources. We want to do this in a way that does not unduly burden consumers and businesses and export jobs outside of Europe. Contrary to the Commission’s 2015 renewable energy progress report, I am happy to note that the UK is ahead of our mid-term target and that we remain on track to reach our goal of 30% of electricity from renewable sources by 2020. We recognise the importance of energy efficiency both for reducing dependence on imports as well as for overall consumption. We do not support the rapporteur’s desire to see an increased role for the Commission in monitoring Member States’ action via enhanced oversight. We do not support binding efficiency and renewable targets. These skew investment decisions and are not the best way for Member States to spend taxpayer money effectively. These reports seek to enhance the role of the Commission and the EU, and for those reasons we shall vote against both of them."@en1
