"I support the Council’s position and have voted against this amendment, which is a proposal not to support the legislation. I disagree with that as this is a good piece of legislation, which aims to promote the free movement of citizens and businesses by simplifying the acceptance of certain public documents, for example, by abolishing the costly and burdensome
requirement. It is important to note that it does not affect recognition of the content of public documents in order to preserve the sovereignty of Member States, particularly with regard to family law matters, etc.
The regulation covers all civil status documents, and certain other documents that are often required by members of the public concerning, for example, residence, nationality and absence of a criminal record. Like my colleague Mr Pospíšil, I am slightly disappointed that diplomas, etc. were not included, and hopefully that can be rectified in due course, but I do welcome multilingual standard forms.
