"Madam President, it was with real pride that I attended the opening of Hitachi Rail Europe’s new train production plant at Newton Aycliffe last summer in my constituency. A real success story of what we should be promoting in the North-East of England in terms of inward investment and local job creation. All credit to the local community, our local unions, County Durham’s investment team, and the local MP Phil Wilson, who worked together to attract rail production back to the very place that the very first passenger trains were built – in the world, I should stress. On Monday this week, the chairman of Hitachi made it clear that, while respecting the democratic rights of UK citizens, Brexit would force Hitachi and similar companies to re-think, because they still have a European vision and would be disadvantaged in pursuing it from the UK, meaning less investment in my region and fewer good local jobs. We urgently need a modern industrial policy and we urgently need a European Commissioner who gets it. For the European rail supply industry, today’s report sets out clearly the challenges for the sector, and I congratulate my colleague, Martina, on the report. But for British rail production and its workforce of thousands, nothing is as urgent as ensuring that we remain in the EU on 23 June."@en1
