"Mr President, the purported aim of this legislation is to promote the free movement of citizens and businesses by simplifying the acceptance of certain public documents in the European Union. So today we have the latest gift to those that threaten us, whose activities will directly benefit from this proposal, and a proposal that will only further undermine national security and create further pressures on our security resources.
The civil status documents to be ‘harmonised’ via this proposal are the very ones that preserve distinctiveness and act as barriers, two aspects that should be safeguarded and left in the domain of national governments, precisely to thwart the intent of those who will benefit from a one—size—fits—all approach. We all know about the cheapness of fraudulent EU passports, we know about the extent of stolen EU passports and other identifications, so why add to the plethora of stuff out there that only helps people who actually threaten us?
I am left scratching my head completely at this proposal. Its timing is ill-judged, its purpose is ill-judged, and it benefits people who actually want to hurt and threaten us. So I strongly recommend you to put it back on the shelf – if you can’t abandon it completely – and stop gifting things like this to people who will harm us. This is wrong time, wrong place, wrong proposal."@en1
