"I voted against this report which was on the need to arm space with observational satellites. Such satellites would be used to aid weaponry and militaristic practices. The report aims to use the Galileo (EU GPS satellites) and Copernicus (Earth observation satellites) programmes for military use and to establish a European Framework Cooperation for Security and Defence Research on space.
It calls for close cooperation between the EU and NATO in the area of security and defence, and for the establishment for a European Defence Union - all of this to be funded through a strategy agreed by the High Representative and the Commission.
As Sinn Féin is committed to protecting Irish neutrality, I voted against this extension to the CSDP policy by militarising space."@en1
