"I supported this report. Tunisia has been successful in consolidating its democratic transition. The country has created a new constitution safeguarding rights and freedoms and has developed a consolidated judicial system and free media. Tunisia has come out of the Arab spring most successfully and has taken major steps to build a stable democracy in the region. Currently, however, Tunisia is going through increasingly greater difficulties. This is mostly due to the series of targeted terrorist attacks hitting one of the country’s key sectors: tourism. Due to these attacks, the growth projection for 2016 has been revised from 3% in 2015 to 0.5% in 2016. On 15 May 2014, an initial EURO 300 million programme was approved for Tunisia to improve public-finance management and operation of the fiscal system, strengthening the social safety net and improve the regulatory framework for trade and investment. In August 2015, the Commission has made provisions for a second MFA programme totalling EURO 500 million to improve its budgetary position and balance of payments and bring a climate more conducive to investments. I believe it is absolutely necessary to support economic and political stability on the borders of the European Union and this can be done by providing macro-financial assistance."@en1
