"Madam President, in 1995 Tunisia was the first Mediterranean country to sign an Association Agreement with the European Union and it now needs our help more than ever. Mr Maurel has set out very clearly the Socialist Group position on Tunisia. We see three stages in this. Firstly we think it is vital that the EU does more to assist Tunisia in getting the Ben Ali money back to Tunisia. Some of that money is currently stuffed in EU banks, and that is an unacceptable situation. Secondly, we do want a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement with Tunisia, but it has to be asymmetrical: we have to open up our markets more than we demand them opening up their markets because of the precarious economic situation in that country. And thirdly, of course we do welcome this macro-financial assistance to Tunisia, but we want to emphasise that this is not a blank cheque and that we expect continued progress on multi-party democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights."@en1
