"I voted in favour of this report for a number of reasons. Firstly, the report aims to emphasise the pivotal importance of innovation for sustainable food production in the context of increasing environmental concerns. At the same time, innovation should be an integral part of the efforts to ensure a sustainable economic prosperity in a thriving European rural community. Making better use of innovative power ensures agriculture can be part of the solution to a number of economic and environmental challenges, especially considering the depopulation of rural areas in more recent times. By singling out the most topical issues such as precision farming, climate smart farming and making better use of the power of nature by combating plant diseases with insects, the report shows how we can produce more products in a better, more sustainable way while lowering our impact on the environment. A main concern of the report is that the potential of innovation in agriculture has not been fully recognised nor is the European regulatory framework fit to keep pace with rapid advancements. Key challenges have to be addressed in order to accelerate and stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship in agriculture, something that is needed considering the current market volatility and global competition."@en1
