The report highlights the importance of innovation when developing sustainable agriculture and how innovation can improve the economic prospects of producers. It emphasises that economic development and sustainable production are not mutually exclusive. Innovation and research have an important role to play in fulfilling both objectives of better economic prospects and sustainable production.
Small and medium-sized farms are a hugely important part of European agriculture: it is essential that the benefits of innovation and research in agriculture reach small and medium-sized farms. It is not just high-production farms that benefit.
The same applies to disadvantaged regions such as mountainous and peripheral regions. Agriculture producers in these disadvantaged areas have to be able to benefit from innovation and research. Agriculture is very important to my country, accounting for EUR 9 billion exported, or 10% of our total exports, and employing over 150 000 people."@en1
