"I supported the report. However, I did vote against a number of paragraphs which focused on plant breeding with non-conventional breeding techniques, which include new genetic engineering techniques and called on the European Commission to deregulate these and allow their use in agriculture. Likewise, I voted against calls for the possibility of provisional approval of so-called ‘low risk substances’. Criteria for such substances are not defined, and chemical substances should not in any case be put in the same category as naturally occurring substances. Thankfully, these paragraphs did not make it into the final report.
Overall, the report did make some very good recommendations for European agriculture and it clearly highlighted some of the major pressures it faces. For example, as the global population rises, satisfying the demand for healthy food and optimal nutrition is one of the biggest challenges facing the world. Shrinking land availability, environmental loss and degradation, water shortages, increased energy demand, and the emergence of new pests and diseases are placing considerable pressure on our natural environment. This means farmers are finding it harder to produce food in a sustainable way. To combat this, technological innovation is needed, as this report clearly acknowledges."@en1
