"I was very happy to support this report, along with the majority of my colleagues. It is obvious that many large retailers and processors abuse their position in the food supply chain with ordinary farmers. This has the unfortunate effect of making farmers price takers and it leaves them with a very weak bargaining position with retailers. It also has led to a situation whereby large retailers and processors can abuse their dominant position which, although not illegal, is very questionable. Considering the current weak agricultural markets, where farmers are receiving very low prices for their products, even below the cost of production, it is necessary that an adequate legal framework is in place so that farmers are protected and can achieve a fair price for their produce. That is why I supported the Commission bringing forward legislation on UTPs. However, I was disappointed that within the report it did not specify when the Commission should bring forward such legislation. On another note, I was happy that the report did acknowledge and support farmers joining producer organisations as one way to combat UTPs."@en1
