"I voted in favour of this report because following the signing of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) last year, the need for development principles to run through all EU policies such as environment, agriculture, trade, education, culture, etc., is greater than ever. The principle of Policy Coherence for Development (PCD) represents the EU’s commitment to take account of the impact of its policies on international development.
To truly achieve sustainable development, the policies we pursue in agriculture, trade, security and defence, must clearly correspond and compliment sustainable development, and this is what this report aims to achieve.
Despite the difficulties to implement PCD, the EU should make an effort to ensure more synergies among EU policies, and this report – supported by all sides of the Parliament – represents the commitment to uphold and enhance the principle of PCD in light of the SDGs. A specific European Council meeting on PCD before the publication of the next Commission’s report in 2017 would contribute to raise awareness of PCD and to better define the responsibilities of the different actors involved."@en1
