"Mr President, I also want to welcome the Commissioner to the Chamber this evening and I welcome his work on this. It is important that the UN and the EU work as partners as we approach the High-Level Meeting. As others have said, a huge amount has been done in this area in recent years, but we still have exceptionally large numbers of people across the globe who have to live with the reality of AIDS. Forty million people have been affected. The reality is that 16 million people at least are living with AIDS as a consequence of having antiretroviral drugs following proper testing.
I would make one point in this debate and it is this: I think we have become complacent in the European Union on the prevalence of AIDS. In my own country the numbers last year were at the highest level of new cases for the past five years. At least one-third of people in Ireland are not even aware that they are prone to obtain the virus and are possible carriers of the virus. So we have got to do much more within Europe to address the issue while supporting the United Nations, as we do in this area."@en1
