"I voted against this report, which endorses the Commission’s proposal on the Single Market Strategy. Both the Commission proposal and this report focus on increasing competitiveness in the European Single Market, at the extent of secure jobs, workers’ rights and environmental protection. It calls for the repealing of ‘unnecessary legislation’ regulating businesses in Member States, and for deepened enforcement of the Strategy by the Commission of Member States.
Not only does this report promote a thoroughly neoliberal attitude towards the economy, it also calls for further serious infringements on Member States’ sovereign rights. It states that Member States must refrain from implementing taxation and trade laws that may discriminate against businesses from other Member States (promoting harmonisation of trade and tax laws at EU level); endorses the Capital Markets Union, which Sinn Féin strongly opposes, and calls for a single European VAT rate."@en1
