"This report was based on the concerning premise that all non-tariff barriers in the European Single Market that can’t be justified under certain criteria should be abolished. The non-tariff barriers being referred to are barriers to intra-EU trade, which may be government regulations on the minimum wage, workers’ rights, food safety or environmental protection, for example. The so-called new generation of free trade agreements such as CETA and TTIP are also aimed at removing these non-tariff barriers.
Despite paying lip service to exceptions for ‘legitimate public policy reasons’, the report amounts to a major infringement of governments’ right to regulate by stating that any NTBs must be justified under a pro-competition article of the Treaty of the EU. It calls for urgent action by the commission and Member States to reduce NTBs and promote competition. For these reasons, I voted against the report."@en1
