"I voted in favour of this report, which deplores the impact of austerity policies on women and underlines the crucial role of public services in combating poverty. It calls on the Commission to introduce a comprehensive leave system comprising maternity, paternity, parental and carers’ leave to meet the needs of parents and ensure that women can continue to work after having children.
The report incorporates proposals put forward by my Sinn Féin colleague Lynn Boylan in her parliamentary opinion on this report. The most significant Sinn Féin proposal which was approved by MEPs was our call for the introduction of paid leave for people experiencing domestic violence. We know that one in five women experience domestic abuse. British statistics show 20% of working women had to take a month off work in the previous year due to domestic violence, and 2% of working women actually lost their jobs as a result of it.
Paid leave would ensure their employment – and their economic independence – is protected when dealing with the impact of domestic violence, for example, by allowing people the time to manage medical appointments, court appearances and other duties that must be addressed in such situations."@en1
