"As a Conservative MEP, I share the fundamental aims underlying the perspective new energy deal for EU citizens – that it should be fair on consumers, protect them from energy poverty and promote competition in the sector (as such, I support the provision of clear price information which enables EU consumers to shop around for cheaper energy prices). However, I found certain draft amendments in the ITRE report problematic, specifically with the prescribed definition of ‘energy poverty’. Conservatives believe that a loose and non-binding definition could be agreed. Yet any attempts to set a binding definition would be unhelpful, as it must be up to each member state to decide what ‘energy poverty’ looks like nationally, based on their own calculation of low income and the reasonable cost of energy. A number of further provisions called for in the report have an established basis in the Third Energy Package, and are therefore unnecessary – we must focus on implementing existing legislation more efficiently, rather than duplication. Likewise, I could not support proposals in the report that are tantamount to price regulation, or an EU-wide ban on doorstep selling. As such, I voted against the Griffin report."@en1
