"Mr President, energy poverty is a blight on the lives of over 50 million Europeans. Across our continent people are struggling with the cost of heating their homes and this is unacceptable. In my constituency this has an impact on one in ten households. No one should have to turn off their heating during the depths of winter and no one should have to choose between heating and eating. I welcome the report from my fellow Labour MEP, Theresa Griffin. This report is an important step forward in our efforts to solve some of these issues and, if implemented, will provide a range of measures to tackle the root causes of energy poverty. I welcome the empowerment of consumers, providing opportunities for consumers to find the most appropriate deal for them and move away from unsuitable tariffs. I am appalled today that Tory and UKIP MEPs voted against a ban on unfair commercial practices and concrete actions for the most vulnerable consumers. This is not the way to deal with energy poverty. Theresa’s report sets out a clear plan."@en1
