"I voted against this resolution, which sought to set out the European Parliament’s position in relation to a new framework for transatlantic exchanges of personal data. This new framework comes up for discussion again after the Safe Harbour agreement was invalidated next year. I was prepared to vote in favour of the resolution, however two vitally important amendments were lost, so I withdrew my support for the final vote.
The amendments concerned had called for a sunset clause to be included, and for negotiations on an improved basis to take place on the basis of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation – the very Regulation that the Safe Harbour agreement had contravened.
As I did not find the joint resolution to be nearly critical enough of the mass collection of large quantities of data, and as these amendments were not included, I voted against."@en1
