"I voted in favour of this report, which was an approval of an application by Greece to mobilise the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF). My colleague Liadh Ni Riada was rapporteur on the report. The report approved aid of EUR 6.4 million for 557 redundant workers from the Larissa supermarket chain in Greece, which closed last year. It also approves support for 543 young people not in employment or education (NEETs) in the same area.
The EGF funds are used to provide re-training and personalised job search supports to workers made redundant as a result of globalisation and major changes in global trade patterns. In recent years changes to the rules of the EGF have meant that workers made redundant as a result of the financial crisis can also be covered by the EGF programmes. In this case, the Greek application relied on the ‘crisis-related’ criteria for mobilisation of the EGF. The application cites a 30% drop in food/beverage consumption and purchasing power as a result of the crisis.
Naturally I support the proposal to provide assistance to workers made redundant as a result of the crisis to find new employment."@en1
