"Mr President, the single market makes it easier for businesses and consumers to trade across a marketplace of 500 million customers in 28 countries. It helps us to reduce costs and therefore increase choice. It is good to hear Members from across Europe support it. In the east of England that I represent, 50% of our exports go to customers in other parts of the single market; 300 000 jobs are directly linked to this trade, and it is 10% of our GDP. Of course there is always more we can do, especially to increase trade in services, to make the market fit for purpose in a digital age, to support innovators and to support businesses, small and large, and this report makes 100 specific recommendations. I am very pleased that in this report, Parliament will endorse the reforms negotiated by our national leaders in February to reduce red tape and set specific targets to reduce burden reductions in key sectors. Thank you also for supporting my suggestion for a more transparent and accessible appeals process on standardisations. There are a few issues I do not agree with but we can strip those out. In general this sets a clear direction of travel for improving and modernising our single market, and this will support jobs and growth, choice, and reduce costs."@en1
