"Madam President, the report suggests a number of legislative changes to parental leave including extending the minimum amount of parental leave to 6 months and the inclusion of a minimum of 2 weeks’ paternity leave. The aim of this report is to assess the application of legislation on parental leave by different Member States and to draw the necessary political conclusions. I support the calls of this report, alongside my EPP colleagues, as it recognises the importance of providing parents with adequate parental leave. Ireland currently follows EU directives on parental leave. We would welcome the calls in this report, including the minimum term of 2 weeks' paternity leave, as Ireland's employment laws do not as of now recognise paternity leave. However, the introduction of paternity leave in legislation would be of benefit to working parents in Ireland, and I am pleased to say that, in his first interview, the new Minister, Leo Varadkar, has said he intends legislating to make this happen. As Ms Stihler and Ms Harkin indicated, whether fathers take it up or not is a different matter."@en1
