"Madam President, I welcomed the report today that was debated and voted upon on parental leave. Mums and dads across the European Union want to spend quality time with their children, in particular in those early days when a child comes into a family home, and I support calls for the paternity leave to be a minimum of two weeks across the 28 Member States. In the UK that has already happened; it was my party that wanted it extended to four weeks. But 40% of fathers in the UK do not take extra leave and in the EU as a whole only 10% of fathers take one extra day of parental leave, whilst 97% of mums take the most leave that they possibly can take. Therefore this debate today is a question of equality and a question of fairness as well. So we have the opportunity of making sure that parental leave is put on the political agenda and of extending paternity leave across the 28 Member States to a minimum of two weeks."@en1
