"I supported this resolution because the overwhelming majority of citizens consider having knowledge of where their food comes from to be very important to them. In Ireland the border remains an obstacle to transparency when it comes to origin labelling. I also supported an amendment calling for more information on the impact of trade deals on food labelling.
My Sinn Féin colleague Lynn Boylan had input into the resolution during negotiations. In the last resolution on this issue to be voted on by the European Parliament, in February last year, Parliament called on the Commission to come forward with country of origin labelling (COOL) for meat used as an ingredient in processed foods.
This resolution focuses more on products such as milk, products which use milk as an ingredient and ‘lightly processed foods’, whilst still maintaining the call for COOL for other products. The Commission has cited ‘costs and administrative burdens’ to business operators for not bringing in COOL for such products and this resolution scrutinises these excuses."@en1
