"I voted in favour of this report on mandatory origin labelling. The report renewed the European Parliament’s call on the Commission to stop ignoring citizen demand and come forward with legislative proposals to extend the current origin labelling regime to more products including: milk and milk products used as an ingredient as well as meat used as an ingredient in processed foods. After a series of food fraud scandals consumer confidence has dropped. Increasing transparency in the food chain by extending origin labelling to more products on the market would be a significant step in regaining some of this lost trust. Moreover, surveys have shown that the vast majority of consumers want to know where the food they buy and eat comes from. The success of Bord Bia’s Quality Assurance scheme in Ireland has shown that such labelling schemes can be achieved. Any existing and future labelling legislation must also take account of the unique situation in Ireland caused by partition and renewed efforts must be taken by all key stakeholders to avoid any further situations where produce born and reared in one part of Ireland and finished in another is being labelled as ‘mixed-origin’."@en1
