"Led by Labour and Social Democratic colleagues, the European Parliament has clearly indicated that it will not allow the granting of market economy status to China as things stand. Despite its transformation in the last 15 years, China simply is not yet a market economy, and in the EU we must not expose our industries to unfair competition. Instead, we must modernise our trade defences. Being a part of the EU, the largest economy in the world, allows the UK to contend with China on an equal basis, and gives us the tools to protect our industries, together with our European colleagues. Outside the EU, UK industries would be much more open to be undercut on the world stage, and our government more likely to be negotiated into a corner by giant players like China. The EU has the power and potential to forge a fairer and more equitable world trade system, which puts planet and people before profit. Working together with progressives from across Europe, I will continue to advocate and work towards that goal. The UK must lead that development from within the EU."@en1
