"I have been extremely concerned about the granting to China of market economy status since the Protocol of accession to the World Trade Organisation by China which, upon expiry at the end of this year, has the potential to grant China market economy status. I would argue that this is a misinterpretation of section 15 of the WTO Protocol, as China must first meet all five of the EU’s criteria to qualify as a market economy, which it has not done. Hence, I oppose and will oppose any unilateral concession of market economy status to China, not least until it has fulfilled its obligations to meet the five criteria laid out in the WTO Protocol of accession. We must have a coordinated strategy with our major trading partners and we need to use special rules in anti-dumping cases until China becomes a genuine market economy."@en1
