"This resolution deals with trade between the EU and China, and specifically with the fact that at the end of 2016 the terms which China signed up to the World Trade Organisation in 2001 will expire and need to be re-evaluated.
I disagree with the EU dictating to China how to run its economy – however, there are objective criteria agreed by WTO members as to what qualifies as a ‘market economy status’ for a state. This resolution stresses that China does not meet these five criteria.
It reiterates the importance of trade between the EU and China while also acknowledging the concerns expressed by trade unions across Europe, particularly in relation to manufacturing and industries including steel, textiles, solar and chemical products.
Unions are concerned that price dumping by China in the EU market has a negative impact on jobs, and this would worsen if China were to be unilaterally granted market economy status without meeting the objective criteria. I voted in favour of the joint motion for a resolution."@en1
