"Madam President, the European Union is the world’s largest seafood market and this market is supported not only by EU fisheries but also by imports from third countries. In a sector so vast, it is important that the standards and rules of the European Union regarding fisheries, and the labelling of fish products, are adhered to by all, including producers and importers from third countries. European consumers should be able to rely on the supply chain that provides fishery products all across Europe. They should be protected from fraudulent acts such as the mis-labelling of fishery products. It is vital that we improve the traceability of fishery and aquaculture products across the European Union. The fisheries industry is of great importance to my state, Ireland. The industry contributes about EUR 700 million annually to national income and employs 11 000 people. A European-wide traceability label, as proposed here, would be of benefit to the fisheries industry both in Ireland and across the EU."@en1
