"Madam President, I too am deeply alarmed by the situation in Gambia, where last month peaceful protesters were brutally arrested, with reports of torture, and one opposition activist, Solo Sandeng, has died in custody. All of this, as we have heard, is happening against a backdrop of grave harassment of human rights defenders, journalists and LGBTI people.
The EU was right in its action when it blocked some EUR 8 million in aid because of the poor human rights record and anti—gay legislation, but what this has led to is the Gambian authorities expelling our representatives, and it means that ties are cut. Therefore, I think it is really important that we continue to support those who are taking the lead in standing up for reform, but we also need to work closely with the African Union on this. I am also concerned about the implications for elections in December: against this backdrop, can they really be free and fair? So we have to urge the government of Gambia to ratify the African Charter on Democracy ..."@en1
