"Madam President, Crimea, and more widely, the situation in occupied eastern Ukraine must not be allowed to fall into the realms of frozen conflicts. The EU and Member States must keep up the pressure and remain resolved in applying the sanctions against Russia over the annexation of Crimea. Beyond the geostrategic picture, however, are the people living in Crimea: minority communities are facing persecution, including notably the Crimean Tatars and ethnic Ukrainians. Already 20 000 have fled to mainland Ukraine and the object of the current policy is to force the rest of the Tatar population to do the same; the 21st century version of the forced deportation in 1944 under Stalin. The EU and Member States must remain vigilant to these issues and we must encourage Turkey to be as strong in defending their ethnic kinsmen in Crimea as they are in defending their ethnic kinsmen, the Turkmen, in Syria. Forced territorial annexation of territory at the point of a gun is totally unacceptable in the modern world."@en1
