"Mr President, I think it is good that we are having this discussion today and that we are trying to do something about it, but as a Member of the European Parliament I was massively surprised 19 months ago when my wife and I had a child and we attempted to see whether there was any possibility of parental leave, and, as it turns out, there was not. Now some people might think it is acceptable that there is no parental leave for men in here, but I discovered there was none for women either.
I decided to take parental leave anyway and I have to say that I was absolutely shocked at the reaction. The headlines in my national press were: ‘what is the point in electing MEPs if they don’t turn up to work?’ The level of abuse was completely and utterly astonishing. So what I am asking here is: whatever you are discussing today for the rest of the people of Europe, could we start at home, start here, and actually apply something that makes sense? As one of the MEPs said, it is the most beautiful time of life. It is also one of the most difficult times, and it was made worse by the rules of this Parliament, and you should be ashamed of yourselves."@en1
