". – Mr President, I have often argued in this Chamber against wind and solar power, so it is refreshing to find a renewable technology which I can support wholeheartedly. Hydro is predictable. It is reliable. It is controllable. It is affordable. It takes relatively little maintenance, and it operates without subsidies. In fact, in every respect, it is the polar opposite of the solar and wind that we have wasted vast resources on in recent years, driving up energy prices and forcing energy—intensive businesses to move out of the European Union altogether. The problem, of course, is that availability of hydropower is restricted by the availability of suitable locations and suitable topography. We are now facing calls for the harmonisation of rules for licensing hydropower projects. We, in my party, will oppose any such moves for European harmonisation. Hydro resources in my country, the UK, are a national asset and we will take a very dim view of attempts to control these assets from Brussels."@en1
