"Madam President, we certainly need action to promote social progress in today’s world of globalisation, an ageing society and – as you have said yourself, Commissioner – changing work patterns. Yes, of course, reviewing our tax systems: and the debate we had before this was very relevant in that area. We need a fair distribution of income, fostering of growth and, of course, a redistribution of our taxes. But we also need to promote employment, and employment with fair working conditions and a minimum wage, a living wage. That needs to be encouraged and promoted in all Member States: employment that will focus on small and medium businesses and that will provide valuable jobs for women, for young people, for minorities. I say to all those who are opposed to the trade deals that have been negotiated at present: those trade deals are focused on generating employment within the European Union. They are very important for small and medium enterprises, especially those that want to trade internationally. We need to enhance access and performance in education and particularly to focus on providing people with skills. In this area I would mention in particular our young people: 20% of them are unemployed. That is not equal. Young people, women, minorities – they are the ones who are unskilled and trapped in low-paid jobs. So, education and focusing on retraining people to provide them with the necessary skills for today’s world: that is the key to reducing inequality."@en1
