"I voted in favour of this proposal, even though Ireland decided not to opt into the recast directive for a number of reasons. These reasons include that 1. The proposal conflicts with some national policies for example the internationalisation of education 2. The proposal has the potential to undermine the state immigration controls and 3. The UK is not participating in the proposal. There is a recital in the proposal that Ireland is not bound by the directive. However, I was happy to support the proposal as it provides volunteers, researchers and au pairs that have previously been open to exploitation in this area with legal protection. Furthermore, it allows us to foster instead of losing our most skilled, researchers and intellects who are responsible for attracting innovation and R&D investment, that can substantially contribute to the future growth of our economy."@en1
