"Labour MEPs support this proposal to provide legal certainty for Europol activities and to contribute to further EU-level cooperation of law-enforcement authorities. The Regulation provides extensive rules and provisions for the processing of information by Europol and has been aligned with the recently adopted Data Protection Directive. It will also establish a specialised Joint Parliamentary Scrutiny Group to monitor Europol’s activities, including any potential impact on fundamental rights and freedoms. I have a particular interest in Europol’s vital work tackling sex trafficking and the sexual abuse of children and young people, including online abuse. The agency’s partnership with Missing Children Europe and the Member States’ ‘safer children’ centres, such as the Cambridge-based UK’s Internet Watch Foundation, is an excellent example of why our membership of the EU contributes to our safety and security and improves the lives of women, children and vulnerable people. Exiting the EU would increase the risk of predatory behaviour going undetected resulting in more victims and fewer prosecutions. This is not a risk I am prepared to take in the forthcoming UK referendum."@en1
