"I had several serious concerns with aspects of this report, which in my view amount to an infringement of basic civil liberties. There was no final vote on this report as it was at second reading phase. However, I voted in favour of a rejection amendment.
The Council proposal enhances and expands the remit and operational capacity of Europol, including giving the enforcement agency the power to determine what online content is illegal or not and substantially increased data collection power.
On top of enhancing power, the Council proposal seeks to remove oversight and monitoring of Europol activity. While the report subjects Europol to tighter data protection restrictions, the removal of the Joint Supervisory Body removes all on-site regulation and the monitoring of Member State databases.
I also voted in favour of a Greens amendment calling for the controversial Internet Referral Unit to be legislated on separately."@en1
