"Madam President, as a Member of the Committee on International Trade (INTA) I am normally in favour of free trade agreements and in favour of waiting for the final document before making up my mind, but I think with regard to Mercosur I have a different opinion. Firstly, I think the timing is all wrong, especially from the point of view of the struggling agricultural sector. At a time when prices are dropping, consumption of meat is dropping, when the Russian ban is impacting hugely, when the cumulative effect of other FTAs is beginning to affect us and when there is no equivalence of standards – we want to make it worse. I think that this is not good enough and we have to cry ‘stop’. As has been pointed out, there is already an imbalance of almost 20 billion between what we take in and what we export. It is very good for Mercosur. No wonder they want to push the door open further without equivalence of standards. I think it is time to say we must mind our own agricultural sector first and then think about Mercosur when the time is right."@en1
