"Madam President, coming from Ireland I have the greatest empathy with the Greek people, and indeed the Greek Government right now, because what they are suffering, we have suffered. We heard the same arguments. We were told at the time that the debt was too big, that we would default, that we would be better off out of the eurozone, that all the money was going to the banks and that it would lead to zero growth in the economy. Well, a few years down the line, thanks to good government and the sacrifices of the Irish people, we are now the fastest growing economy in Europe, and hopefully we can say the same about Greece in a few years’ time. I think in fairness to Greece, and to the Prime Minister, the last time I spoke here I was very critical of him. I told him it was time to show a bit of leadership and stop running around Europe, giving interviews to all the media outlets and, in fairness, he has changed. It takes a big man to change tack and admit the folly of his ways, and especially the grandstanding of his then Finance Minister, the blustering Mr Varoufakis. So now I think that they are making the readjustments. We should do everything we can to be as flexible as possible with the Greek Government so that they can make the necessary recovery and enjoy the growth that we are enjoying in Ireland today."@en1
