"Mountainous regions in the EU were rarely in the focus of cohesion policy. This report emphasizes how the mountainous regions of the EU can contribute to its targets, such as Europe 2020. The natural resources and assets of these areas can provide jobs to improve employment within the EU, especially green jobs which contribute to the fight against climate change. The rich variety of renewable energy sources could contribute to the EU renewable energy targets. At the same time, proper support is needed, through the use of structural funds, for initiatives that improve the social and cultural cohesion of mountainous communities and help to overcome physical isolation and lack of cultural diversity, in particular through access to and direct participation in arts and cultural life. I represent a beautiful rural, isolated, mountainous area in the north-west of England – Cumbria – and I know first-hand the impact that the EU cohesion policy can bring to sustainable economic, social and cultural development of the regions."@en1
