"Madam President, I voted against this issue – of course I voted against this issue. We see the debacle and the environmental and economic disaster that the common fisheries policy has brought across the European Union, and now we wish to export our bad practice to the west coast of Africa, or even further. We have seen what other fishery agreements have done to other countries on the west coast of Africa. This is no way to be helping developing countries across the third world. We see EUR 600 000 a year being given to just 34 fishing ships to take 6 500 tonnes of Liberian fish.
What effect is that having on fishing communities across Liberia? I hope it is not, but I fear that it is having the same effect as has happened across many parts of West Africa where we have seen fishermen not just seeing their stocks being hoovered up, but actually being killed by European Union fishing boats ploughing them out of the water. It is an absolute disgrace and a humanitarian disaster."@en1
