"I voted in favour of this proposal to establish a regulatory framework at Union level for indices used as benchmarks in financial instruments and financial contracts. After recent cases of manipulation of interest-rate benchmarks such as LIBOR (London Interbank Offered Rate), EURIBOR (Euro Interbank Offered Rate) and foreign exchange benchmarks, I welcome this new regulation that will prevent banks manipulating indices in order to influence the prices of loans, mortgages and derivatives to their own advantage. This new legislation ensures a high level of consumer and investor protection that will prevent future fraud and the controlling of benchmarks, which can inflate the prices of many consumer goods, from petrol to mortgage rates. Until now, in most Member States, there has been no national-level regulation of the production of benchmarks."@en1
