"I voted in favour of this piece of legislation because it addresses the fact that European railways are neither efficient nor transparent: with more than 11 000 different national rules in terms of safety and interoperability, there is a lot of overlap and opacity.
The report aims to update the rules around interoperability and to make room for the new needs arising from the opening of the market and the expected growth of rail’s share as a mode of transport, notably by clarifying existing rules on the use of technical specifications for interoperability, simplifying the long and costly authorisation procedures for rolling stock, energy and infrastructures and ensuring vehicle interoperability in the EU, through a European vehicle authorisation to be granted by the European Railways Agency, and the creation of a European register."@en1
